New leopard collared, unfortunately, one is lost.
Category: Uncategorized | Date: Jul 08 2008 | By: okavangocarnivores
A new leopard discovered was sighted while two of our researchers was radio tracking a mortality beeping leopard radio-collar. He was darted and radio collared. Unfortunately the old radio collared leopard which has been monitored for more half a year was found near by and confirmed dead. The cause of the death has not been identified yet. It is so hard breaking, but we are determined to continue monitoring carnivore species in the okavango area. Our efforts are less of a fortune because, large carnivore collaring is costly, time consuming and difficult. We will continue to rely on and ask for donations from everyone to help with donation so that we can be able to accomplish our mission.e

A loss of a collared animal will leave some questions unansweared, however, it is very important to us.

To Annie.
It is so sad indeed. Some body tissues and organs has preserved for investigation. The new leopard was allegedly found feeding on the carcass ,but, as for now we have no proof that the cause of the death was the result of the territorial fight between the two. The other thing is that it was found not far from the road.

Good Morning
I am Massimo from Italy
from several years i cooperate with different zoological societies and organizations of my country studying leopard (panthera pardus), i have coordinated a research in Armenia on ecology and conservation on persian leopard, i am studying geographical leopard size difference in all leopard range and i am cooperating for a possible future survey in Morocco to study last leopards.
Was there difference in size between two leopards???
Another question, are you collecting predator scats to indify prey frequency??
thank you

Thanks for visiting the blog! There is not much difference between the two leopards in terms of body sizes.
Since were are at the early stage of the leopard research , our focus is on the home range sizes, movement and habitat utilization at the moment. We have not started work on scats analysis yet. We collect diet data from direct observation of kills by radio-collared and non-collared leopard sightings.
Good luck with your research plans. I think your study is very interesting to me, and anxious to learn more on your findings
